glazes

The first two plate shows the base glaze, entrada_C4_125_2, these were fired in two different firings. the second firing eliminated a one hour hold at 1650 deg F.

the remaining plates show the indicated compositional variations. The changes were relatively small perturbations of the base glaze, visible only in the second decimal point in the empirical formula.

The first of the variational plates has decorative element grass, the last plate has weeds as resist mask. the middle two plates utilize leaves.

primary change in empirical formula:

shift in balance of alkali metals: to higher Li2O, lower K2O and Na2O

The resist design in grass is a work in progress. I am infatuated with the line produced by the grass, yet this plate looks as if seaweed had accidentally gotten dropped onto it.

primary change in empirical formula:

higher alumina, lower silica.

glaze entrada_C4_125_23 plate ~8.5 inch diameter

primary change in empirical formula:

shift in alkali metals: higher Na2O, lower K2O

Note the great range in colors in the area where the wash was applied that resulted from a small shift in the composition of the bases in the glaze.

primary change in empirical formula:

shift in alkali earths: higher CaO, lower MgO

Again, re the resist design - the weeds provide a powerful directional image - this pattern shows the possibilities, but...
