Inlay Glaze

A white inlay second glaze design with a sharply delimited boundary, on two different glazes, an oil spot, and a translucent white glaze.

In both cases the line between the two glazes is sharp, though there is some interaction between the two glazes at their interface.

Firing profile

Up Fire profile

150 deg F an hour to 250 deg F

400 deg F an hour to 2050 deg F

120 deg F an hour to 2250 deg F

60 deg F an hour to 2310 deg F with a hold of 20 minutes at 2310 deg F

Down Fire Profile

A half hour hold at 1750 deg F

A three hour hold at 1700 deg F

slow downfire at 25 deg F an hour in the interval 1700 deg F to 1650 deg F

A one hour hold at 1650 deg F

The cones show this as a cone 10 firing.

After glaze application, two glazes are side by side, no gap between, neither overlaping.

A resist mask is applied to the bisque before the application of the first glaze, an emulsion wax is applied.

When all is dry, the resist mask is removed, and the second glaze applied to the now bare bisque.

Clay body is a grolleg porcelain from Tacoma Clay Art Center.

Remarks

The inlay glaze nepheline_Z17_0 is thicker on the pot with mashiko_ZJ_0, so is pale in color.

The thinner application of the inlay glaze on the pot with wt_Z18_0, is partially responsible for the darker mottled cloudy effect seen in the design.

The color and texture of the inlay are not that of unadulterated nepheline_Z17_0, which is a warm brown when thin.

The effect of the abutting glaze wt_18_0 on nepheline_Z17_0 is subtle.
