Glaze Reactions

The background (matrix) glaze is cooper_404_1Na_PZn_hSi; the inlay design is glazed with
oribe-woof-PAl-PSiMg.

The matrix glaze is derived from Emmanuel Cooper's glaze 404 from his book
"The Potters Book of Glaze Recipes."

Prior examples of this inlay glaze are seen surrounded by glazes derived from Cooper's glaze 404:
cooper_404_1Na_PMZn and cooper_404_Z4E_1 .

This glaze has more zinc, and more silica than cooper_404_1Na_PMZn. Here the major difference in the
interaction region are the striking needle crystals seen in the first closeup image. As with cooper_404_Z4E_1,
this background glaze is not as completely dissolved by the inlay glaze as was cooper_404_1Na_PMZn.

The matrix (i.e., background) glaze and inlay glaze overlap minimally before firing. The width of the
original inlay varied from an eighth of an inch to three eighths of an inch.

The design is created by adhering a mask and then applying the main glaze. After drying,
the mask is removed and the open area filled in with a second glaze, using a bulb syringe
with a needle applicator.
