Glaze Interactions

This is a further exploration of a firing which has a slow up-fire in addition to having the usual holds
on the way down.

The background glaze has large clusters of micro-crystals in a fluid matrix, while the inlay glaze is viscous
and minimally melted. The result is that the background glaze flows through parts of the inlay leaving behind
small disconnected islands. The micro-crystalline clusters in the fluid matrix of the background glaze
carve ragged accents through the inlay as they plow through. These clusters act similarly to boulders in a
mud flow. The patterns of this flow are seen in the close-up images of the interaction region.

The matrix (i.e., background) glaze and inlay glaze overlap minimally before firing. The width of the
original inlay, which varied from an eighth of an inch to three quarters of an inch, is considerably thicker than my
usual inlay.

The background glaze is oribe-woof-PAlkAl-PSiMg-PZr; the inlay design is glazed with oribe-satIron-PSi.

The design is created by adhering a mask and then applying the main glaze. After drying,
the mask is removed and the open area filled in with a second glaze, using a bulb syringe
with a needle applicator.

The close-up images were heavily edited to enhance detail. The colors of the full image of the bowl
are as they appear in bright light.

Remarks

This firing features a 'rounded at the top' firing profile; with a hold of an hour 100 degreesF
below top temperauture, and a slow climb from there to the top temperature.
